Why is June a Popular Wedding Month?
“Oh, they say when you marry in June, you’re bride all your life; and the bridegroom who marries in June gets a sweetheart for a wife.” This line from the 1954 musical, “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers,” continued the reinforcement of the tradition of being a “June Bride.” June weddings have been popular for years, but what really made people decide to choose this month as “THE” wedding month? Let us go centuries back and find out!
In ancient Roman times, people celebrated the festival of the deity Juno, the goddess of marriage and childbirth, on the first day of June. She was also the protector of women in all aspects of life. Whoever married in June would be blessed with prosperity and happiness, making it a very auspicious month.
Taking the “Annual Bath”
This may sound crazy, but in medieval times, people weren’t into bathing regularly. It was a privilege done only once a year during the last part of May or the beginning of June. After their annual bath, couples would usually tie the knot since they were still fresh and presentable. This was also the time when flowers were most abundant...and so to mask other odors, the brides would usually hold a bouquet of flowers, hence the other common wedding tradition.
Preparing for the Harvest
Back in the day, couples often chose to marry in accordance with the harvest season. A June wedding could result in a conception early enough so that a wife could help out with manual work during the harvest. It also saved the baby from the winter cold...and after the spring birth, the recovered bride would be in good condition to assist in the next harvest. Sounds fun, right?
The June of Today
All of the aforementioned phenomena are not really applicable in the present, so why still keep this tradition? Perhaps for practical reasons! June is the best month for weddings because of the season, summer. It’s warm and you can opt for an outdoor or destination wedding. Flowers are also on sale, that’s a bonus. People can easily take extended leaves and children are on break. It’s also the off-season in many parts of the world, so it’s easy to travel on your honeymoon. With these factors, it’s easy to plan and enjoy the happy occasion.
